Our Technology

Our practice seeks to provide our patients with high quality dental care in a relaxed, fun-loving setting. We utilize state-of-the art technology to provide comfortable – and safe - exams, and to generate detailed information used to better evaluate your dental health.

Digital X-Rays

Several years ago, we began using digital X-rays, imaging technology that makes x-rays safer, faster and more precise.  Now, it’s difficult to even imagine practicing dentistry without Digital imaging!! This form of X-rays allows dentists to see – and treat – problems that are not yet visible, including decay, gum disease and abscesses, preventing suffering and preserving teeth.

There are numerous advantages to Digital technology:

-Digital x-rays decrease patient exposure to radiation by 90% when compared to conventional x-rays

-The picture is clearer.  The contrast can be increased or decreased, and problem areas can easily be enlarged.

- The images appear on the computer monitor in seconds. There is no need to wait for film to develop in chemicals which could take up to 15 minutes with traditional methods. Patients truly benefit from decreased radiation, greater clarity and time savings!!

Laser Technology

Our team recently began utilizing laser technology when treating certain procedures involving our patient’s gums and teeth. A laser, which is a highly concentrated beam of light, offers a different treatment approach. Many dental procedures can be performed almost pain-free with greatly reduced bleeding, discomfort, swelling and the need for pain medication. In addition, laser beams can help sterilize the treatment area, reducing the likelihood of infection and the spread of bacteria. As a result of all of these benefits, recovery may be faster and you can return to your normal routine in less time.

With a laser, your dental provider is able to treat your gums precisely while leaving the surrounding tissues unaffected. Fewer shots, less bleeding and swelling, faster recovery – in many cases, laser technology simply offers an improved means of treating gum issues!

Sound Canceling Headphones

Does the sound of the dental drill make you anxious? Do you avoid regular visits to the dentist because of the unpleasant sounds? We understand what you are feeling and now offer Sound Canceling Headphones to address your concerns, helping you to comfortably obtain the oral healthcare you need – and deserve.

If you’re sensitive to dental noise or simply want a distraction, ask for a set of our headphones or plug into your mobile phone or iPod/MP3 player and pass the time listening to your favorite music.  Have fun!!

Digital Panorex

Like Digital x-rays, Digital Panorex technology has become an essential dental tool.  A Panorex greatly improves the dental experience for our patients and provides a detailed picture of what is happening in areas that are not visible. For example, the Panorex reveals the position of wisdom teeth, and tumors and cysts would also be visible on a Panorex.  Your dental team can easily “zoom in” on areas of concern – and consultations with specialists can occur within seconds.

And like Digital X-rays, a Panorex exposes patients to far less radiation than traditional x-rays.  Add a set of digital bitewing x-rays, and your dentist has an excellent picture into your oral health without exposing you to high levels of radiation – and without the use of chemicals!

The Panorex saves you time as well.  A full mouth x-ray (FMX) used to involve 18-21 images, requiring 10-15 minutes to complete, and typically would not reveal impacted wisdom teeth.  However, a Digital Panorex allows your Dental team to view the entire mouth area in a few seconds.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide can make our patients more comfortable during certain procedures.  Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose, and helps you relax – it is not intended to “put you to sleep”.  You will be able to hear and to respond to any requests or direction the dentist may have.  You should feel calm and comfortable and the effects of the nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed.

VELscope to Screen for Oral Cancer

Oral cancer affects thousands of Americans annually, and 25 percent of these prove fatal.  Early detection has proven critical to survival. When oral cancer is diagnosed in an early stage, the success rate is approximately 90 percent.

Our dental team is trained to look for early signs of oral cancer as part of each dental cleaning. The most frequent oral cancer sites are the tongue, the floor of the mouth, and soft palate tissues on the back of the tongue, lips and gums.  Oral cancer shows up as red, white or discolored lesions, patches or lumps in or around the mouth, and it is typically painless in its early stages.  As the cancer spreads and destroys health oral tissue, the lesions or lumps may become painful.

During your visit, your dental team will talk to you about your health history and examine these areas for signs of mouth and/or throat cancer.  Dr. Epstein’s oral cancer screenings also utilize VELscoe technology to help detect cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions that may not be apparent to the naked eye.  Regular visits to your dentist can improve the chances that any suspicious changes in your oral health will be caught early, at a time when cancer can be treated more easily.

Several years ago, we began to use Isolite mouthpieces with many procedures.  These mouthpieces enable better visibility and moisture control for your dentist, and increase the safety and comfort of our patients. Made of soft, pliable plastic, the mouthpiece conforms to the shape of any mouth, from a young child’s to the elderly.  In position, the mouthpiece automatically protects and retracts the patient’s cheek and tongue, decreasing the likelihood of injury from dental instruments.  The Isolite also serves as a suction device, further helping your dentist provide amazing care.

And the Isolite makes procedures more comfortable! The patient can relax and rest their jaw on a built-in block, eliminating jaw discomfort.  Isolite mouthpieces truly improve the patient experience!

Be sure to check frequently – we are always adding new technology to make your visits wonderful!!
